The Austrian School is a German-language science.
Its concepts were honed in Vienna, but its disputes were fought out in Germany. In the Methodenstreit, Carl Menger's theory of marginal utility set itself apart from Gustav Schmoller's Berlin Historical School, and that confrontation settled how economics understood itself for a century.
The German thread never fully broke. Through Geneva, Ludwig von Mises shaped Wilhelm Röpke, and Röpke shaped Ludwig Erhard. After the ruptures of the twentieth century, Roland Baader and Hans-Hermann Hoppe kept the tradition alive in German, less comfortable than the academic mainstream could bear.
